A Twilio Verify alternative for WhatsApp phone verification
Twilio Verify is a mature, multi-channel verification API. Phone Verif does one thing: it verifies a phone number when the user sends us a WhatsApp message. Here is how the two compare, with sources, so you can pick the right one — including the cases where Twilio is the better fit.
Side-by-side
| Twilio Verify | Phone Verif | |
|---|---|---|
| How the user proves the number | You send a one-time code (SMS, WhatsApp, voice, email…); the user types it back[3] | Reverse OTP: the user sends a pre-filled WhatsApp message to us; no code to type[4] |
| Base price | $0.05 per successful verification, plus channel fees[1] | €0.015 per successful verification (1,000 credits for €15), down to €0.010 at volume[4] |
| Channel fees on top | SMS: +$0.0083 per message (US), higher in many countries. WhatsApp: +$0.0034 per authentication template (US)[1] | None — the user sends the message, so there is no outbound template to pay for[4] |
| Failed attempts | The $0.05 fee applies to successful verifications; channel fees apply to each message sent[1] | Not charged[4] |
| Channels | SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, voice, email, push, TOTP, Silent Network Auth, passkeys[2] | WhatsApp only |
| Coverage | 180+ countries, 42 languages[2] | Anyone with WhatsApp |
| Free start | Trial account, no credit card required[1] | 100 free credits, no credit card required[4] |
Twilio prices are in US dollars and Phone Verif prices in euros, as each provider publishes them. Twilio offers custom volume discounts through its sales team[1].
What a verification actually costs
With Twilio Verify, a successful SMS verification to a US number costs $0.05 + $0.0083 ≈ $0.058, and a WhatsApp one $0.05 + $0.0034 ≈ $0.053[1]. Outside the US, SMS channel fees are often higher, and every resend adds another channel fee. With Phone Verif, a successful verification costs between €0.010 and €0.015 depending on the pack, with no channel fee and nothing charged for failed attempts[4].
When Twilio Verify is the better choice
- Your users don't all have WhatsApp — Twilio can fall back to SMS, voice or email.
- You need TOTP, push, passkeys or Silent Network Auth in the same API[2].
- You already run messaging on Twilio and want one vendor and one invoice.
- You need built-in SMS pumping fraud protection like Twilio's Fraud Guard[2].
When Phone Verif is the better choice
- Your users are in WhatsApp-heavy markets and SMS delivery or cost is a problem.
- You want a fixed, low price per verification without per-country channel fees.
- You don't want to set up a WhatsApp Business account and get templates approved — we run the WhatsApp side for you.
- You want to remove SMS pumping exposure: users send the message, so there is no outbound SMS to abuse.
